Our Revolution Endorses in Georgia and Oklahoma Governors Races

WASHINGTON-- Our Revolution on Monday endorsed Stacey Abrams for Governor of Georgia and Connie Johnson for Governor of Oklahoma. Abrams and Johnson are also endorsed by their local Our Revolution groups.

Our Revolution is proud to endorse Stacey Abrams and Connie Johnson in their historic gubernatorial campaigns,” said Our Revolution President Nina Turner. “Both Stacey and Connie have decades of experience getting things done in the statehouse. They also have the leadership and the vision to fix the growing inequality between people experiencing poverty and those at the very top, end private for-profit prisons, and protect reproductive rights.”

In 2010, Abrams became the first woman to lead either party in the Georgia General Assembly and the first African American to lead in the House of Representatives. During her tenure, she stopped legislation to raise taxes on the poor and middle class and to roll back reproductive health care. She has brokered compromises that led to progress on transportation, infrastructure, and education.

Johnson served for thirty-three years in the State Senate as both a policy analyst and a senator representing Oklahoma City’s predominantly African American “Eastside,” where she primarily focused on physical and mental health, human services for people living on the margins of our society. She served on the full Senate Appropriations Committee and the Health and Human Services Appropriations Subcommittee and was the ranking Democratic member of the Health and Human Services Committee.

“As the Democratic Party continues to examine how to win back the hundreds of seats lost over the last eight years, they would do well by embracing a diverse pool of candidates from a variety of socio-economic backgrounds, not just those who can self-finance or are well connected,” Turner continued. “Moreover, beyond telling African American women that they are the backbone of the Democratic Party, show them by supporting their efforts to run for statewide office. It is past time for Democratic Party to take seriously the creation of a pipeline of diverse progressive candidates so we can build a bench of talented candidates who will keep our party relevant in the decades to come.”

Our Revolution supports progressive champions at every level of government. By supporting candidates up and down the ballot, we are aiming to transform American politics to make our political and economic systems responsive to the needs of working families.
